SA Embu, Kenya

Equipping orphans and vulnerable young people with life skills and emotional and social support can dramatically improve their wellbeing and options for the future. Building a community support structure around them is also vital.

Since 2003, we have partnered with SA Embu, Kenya, rolling out our Kids’ Club model of emotional and social support, which promotes community involvement and ownership. Kids’ Clubs provide a safe place where children can gather, make friends, play and learn, without fear of stigma, abuse or exploitation. Children struggling with trauma have access to counselling, particularly vulnerable orphans are identified and given further specialist care, and parents and guardians are also empowered economically so they are better able to support their families.

How we make a difference:

  • We work closely with SA Embu, Kenya to understand the local context, to develop community-owned responses, and to share knowledge and solutions from other places where we operate.
  • Together, we establish Kids’ Clubs within communities, each supporting at least 30 young children.
  • We build links between the Kids’ Clubs and local institutions, such as churches, to help them identify the most vulnerable children who would benefit from attending the Clubs.
  • We ensure children receive support beyond the Kids’ Clubs with home-based care and emotional support such as counselling.
  • We train young people who have benefited from Kids’ Clubs in previous years, to become Kids’ Club leaders themselves to support other vulnerable children.
  • We help form committees and train local people to take responsibility for the support programme, and we advocate for the long term needs of orphans and vulnerable young people and their guardians.
  • We establish village savings and loans associations as part of our Village Investors Programme (VIP), which enables those looking after vulnerable children to pool their small resources and make business loans to each other, in order to earn a sustainable living and support the children in their care better, and for longer.
