The Qlik Alumni 1010 Challenge

Multiply £10 of your own currency by 10 and you could help 10 parents start businesses that could transform their family’s future.

In 2012, our co-founder Phil Wall launched the first ever 1010 Challenge with Qlik. Using their skills, passions and networks, this raised an incredible $175,000.

Since then, you have all continued to play an important role in our growth and have helped us to expand the impact of our work supporting vulnerable children across Southern and Eastern Africa. From the development of our data dashboards to raising over £1.4 million over the last 14 years, we can’t thank you enough for your commitment to what we do!

Now, we’re challenging you to build on that legacy and take on the 1010 Challenge once again to raise vital funds to support our community-led programmes, such as the Village Investors Programme (VIP).

HOW TO TAKE PART

DECIDE HOW TO INVEST YOUR £10

Ask yourself; what skills can I utilise? Who can I involve? How long will it take?

Here are some idea starters:

⚽ Buy a football and organise a weekly tournament with your friends in the local park.

🎂 Stock your baking cupboard and sell some treats in your office every Friday.

🪑 Purchase some polish or paint and freshen up your unused furniture to sell on Facebook Marketplace.

🍕 Pick up pizza ingredients and ask your mates round for movie nights – it’s cheaper than a takeaway!

WORK OUT HOW TO COLLECT YOUR PROFIT

A simple task but one that you need to have in place.

We recommend creating a fundraising page on JustGiving – it’s quick, simple to use and can be easily shared. Alternatively, you could collect the cash and donate it via our website or bank transfer once you’re finished.

THE DIFFERENCE YOU’LL BE MAKING

“The VIP has changed things for me, it has given me the skills to look after my children in all areas and improve my home and life.”

Meet Stella, a member of the VIP in Ntcheu in central Malawi, where she lives with her four children.

After taking out her first loan from her VIP group in 2019, Stella launched her own business buying and selling tomatoes. From her initial profits, she set up her own food garden which gives her enough produce to feed her family as well as a surplus that she can sell for extra income.

As her savings have grown, she has improved the living conditions for her family. Step-by-step, Stella  has invested in new windows, a door and an iron roof for their home, all whilst continuing to pay for the school fees for all four of her children.
