Oasis Pader, Uganda

Oasis Pader, Uganda

Orphans and vulnerable children in Southern and Eastern Africa face huge challenges to their safety, wellbeing and development. Oasis, our project partner in Uganda, identified a need to protect orphans and vulnerable young people who have been made vulnerable by extreme poverty, in Pader, Northern Uganda.

Together with Oasis, we have developed effective training models for parents, community leaders, teachers and children in child protection, child rights, positive parenting and the importance of education. We work together to increase awareness of child rights, to provide opportunities for education, and to build the capacity of caregivers to sustainably support the orphans and vulnerable young people they look after.

How we make a difference:

  • We work closely with Oasis to understand the local context, to develop community-owned responses, and to share knowledge and solutions from other places where we operate.
  • Together, we increase awareness of child rights and child protection among parents, guardians, community leaders, teachers, and all other community members, through training sessions on child rights, health, sanitation and nutrition.
  • We establish Child Rights Clubs in schools and provide training for teachers and volunteers.
  • We increase access to formal education for orphans and vulnerable children through catch-up classes in schools and ‘life skills’ training.
  • We establish village savings and loans associations as part of our Village Investors Programme (VIP), which enables those looking after vulnerable children to pool their small resources and make business loans to each other, in order to earn a sustainable living and support the children in their care better, and for longer.
